A number of community rinks and arenas in the Southwest are each getting $2500 in funding thanks to the Provincial Government’s Community Rink Affordability Grant started last year.
“We know that the rinks are the centre of activity for many months of the year throughout Saskatchewan,” said Darren Banadyga, Exectutive Director of Sport and Recreation for the Ministry of Parks, Culture and Sport. “The rinks are places where the community gathers socially, they engage in recreation and physical activity, and that enhances the quality of life in those communities.”
The Credit Union iplex and Fairview arenas in Swift Current are just a couple of over 554 facilities in 387 that are receiving the grant, and the Town of Shaunavon has also received funding. The money for each facility and community that received grants will go to fund operating costs and minor capital upgrades.
