Record Month for Retail Trade in Saskatchewan
Stats Canada reports that retailers in Saskatchewan were very busy ahead of the Christmas shopping season.
The latest retail trade numbers show sales in Saskatchewan totalling a record $1.48 billion in November, up 4.3% from the same month in 2011. It’s the third highest percentage increase in Canada, and almost three times the national average increase of 1.4% year-over-year.
Month-to-month, sales were up 0.3% from October 2012, also the third-highest increase in Canada and ahead of the national average of 0.2%.
Provincial Economy Minister Bill Boyd says a strong and diverse economy, increased employment and higher weekly earnings played a role in the increases. He adds the numbers point to increased consumer optimism in Saskatchewan, saying that people in the province are confident that the economy can support growth today and into the future.
