Municipal Referee for Saskatchewan

Saskatchewan has introduced legislation that would allow it to step in if rural and urban municipalities can’t work together when it comes to regional planning.

The amendments will give the government the authority to compel cities and surrounding rural municipalities to establish and participate in regional planning authorities.

Jim Reiter, minister of government relations, says there have been cases where rural municipalities and cities disagree on development.

He says the government can’t allow such conflicts to stifle economic growth.

In the event of a deadlock, the province would have the final say.
