Local Unemployment Rate Still Low
The unemployment rate is Swift Current/Moose Jaw continues to be near the lowest in the country.
In April it was the second lowest in Canada at 2.7%, a big drop from 5.1% a year ago.
That also meant an increase of 4900 jobs to 53,300 over that time and an increase of 3900 people to the labour force.
Last month’s provincial employment figures were the highest on record for the month of April. Employment was up by 16,700 jobs to 548,500, and full time employment reached 444,100, another record for the month.
Saskatchewan also held the lowest seasonally-adjusted unemployment rate in Canada in April at 4.0%, on a national basis, the unemployment rate is 7.2%. Youth employment in the province was 8.2%, again the lowest in Canada.
Saskatchewan also had several other noteworthy highlights in employment growth, for example, educational services were up 11.8%, health care and social assistance was up 7.6%, trade, wholesale and retail was up 6.4%, construction was up 3.3%, and other services were up 15.4%.
