The community of Swift Current has played host to and has several upcoming events that draw high volumes of tourism to the city.

A letter of interest recently came out from the Saskatchewan Games Council to host the 2016 Saskatchewan Summer Games, and the City has expressed great interest in the idea so far.

Full Media Scrum with Dean Robson{mp3}deanrobson{/mp3}”We like the concept,” said City Rec and Parks Director, Dean Robson, “We’ve applied for games before, not often but we applied in 2001 to host the 2004 Summer games, and we weren’t successful, at the time we were lacking in accommodations to host everyone.”

Robson added a lot has changed since we applied that year, we have several new hotels that have come up, we have newer, more modernized and improved facilities that are at par if not better than other communities, and the addition of the new all weather track that’s being built at the Swift Current Comprehensive High School will look great on the bid.

Not only that, our community momentum and spirit is at an all time high with upcoming summer events, and the 2014 Centennial year already creating a buzz in the city.

“We are a community that’s always been proud to show off and host others, I think we’re a community with a lot of spirit, we’ve hosted World events, and I think for us it’d be pretty easy not only as a city but as a region to host provincial games and really put on a good show.  I’m actually quite passionate that we would do a remarkable job and set a very high bar.”

One more reason our city would be a great candidate, is for those residents who have been in the community for several years, hosting these games may bring alive a feeling of nostalgia, and spark a little extra community spirit.

“We did host one time in 1976, and that would be 40 years ago, and we think that’s really cool, so we’d like to get our bid in.”

If Swift Current were to be awarded the games, the revenue they would generate would be upwards of $5 million, and they would fall over a week either in July or August in 2016.
