Gull Lake Continues to Grow

Over the past 2 years Gull Lake has been experiencing positive growth. Infill lots once vacant now have homes on them, and the Centennial Subdivision continues to grow with 5 lots now sold. Last year the Gull Lake School saw a significant increase in enrolment numbers that was phenomenal. This year Gull Lake was approved for a 25 seat Government funded Daycare, and the Kreative Kidz Early Learning Center Inc. is up and running. People are coming from Ontario, BC, and Alberta to make Gull Lake their new home. Our location and proximity to the City of Swift Current is ideal for those wanting to live in a small town, and close to a major centre.

Gull Lake is a community boasting many amenities such as swimming pool, modern ice arena and recreational complex, a well regarded Kindergarten to Grade 12 school, community ball diamonds, a health centre with onsite doctor, award winning weekly newspaper, a town library and as of August 2012, a fully upgraded digital movie theater.

Farming, ranching, oil, and gas still form the basis of our local economy, there are two inland grain terminals; and numerous oil businesses. Renewable energy in the form of Wind Power also plays a role in the local economy with the establishment of the Sunbridge Wind Power Facility (Saskatchewan’s first wind farm), and Cypress Wind Power Facility.

Recent efforts by Town Council to help market and promote the Town appear to be paying off. When the Lyceum Theatre received its upgrades Town Council, Gull Lake Lyceum Theater Board and The Gull Lake Advance did a great deal to promote the Theater. The promoting of the Theater is paying off, as we are seeing patrons coming from all over Southwest Saskatchewan to Gull Lake to see a show. People that come from out of town often come early for a meal at a local restraunt, and no doubt stop in at other businesses as well.

Initiatives such as the, “Communities in Bloom Downtown Revitalization Initiative” currently being undertaken by the Communities in Bloom Committee has helped to add some life to the downtown. Earlier this year Council approved $13,500 to spend on items such as picnic tables, benches, garbage containers, recycle containers, trees, and other misc items to help enhance the look and feel of the downtown. The Committee will also be putting up new signs in town to help direct people to the downtown and Gull Lake Recreational Centre. The Gull Lake Tourism Committee has been working hard getting a local Farmers Market established in the Downtown, and will also be working looking at other ideas such as a show and shine to help draw more people to the downtown. The Communities in Bloom Initiative has also helped to instill a great sense of pride in the community as we are seeing many people volunteer to help keep our downtown and community looking great. Town Council has also been working to help find uses for a few of the vacant buildings in the downtown, and will soon have a major announcement with regards to one of the buildings in the next few weeks.

The Event Planning Committee has also done an excellent job creating the annual Winterfest. Last year the Event went very well for its first year running and next year it will be even better! Currently the committee is working with the Tourism Committee to help plan for the Sunbridge Community Picnic. Enbridge and Suncor will be sponsoring this year’s first ever Sunbridge Community Picnic that will offer a chance for everyone to learn about wind power, and a chance to see a Wind Power Turbine up close. The Community Picnic will be held in conjuction with the annual, “Movie in the Park” organized by the Gull Lake Swimming Pool. These events will no doubt be a lot of fun for everyone.

One of the most important aspects of marketing and promoting our community is getting the good news stories about Gull Lake beyond the borders of the town out to the world. With a lot of help from the Gull Lake Advance, and the creation of the Towns new Website, Face Book and recently added Twitter account more news that ever about Gull Lake is getting out to the world. Gull Lake is a community with a great deal to offer and we will continue to work hard to get the message out.

To all of the people who have recently made the move to Gull Lake welcome we are very glad you have decided to make our Town your new home. To those who may be thinking of making the move we would be pleased to have you make the move, and make our Town your new home.

Mayor Campbell
