SaskTel High Speed Internet customers in 220 rural communities will soon be able to get faster download speeds.

The Crown Corporation is rolling out an upgrade in communities that have DSL service at 5 megabits per second, and customers would be able to move up to a plan that offers download speeds at 10 MBPS.

“It means it will be a lot faster for you, if you’re trying to do anything like download videos or use Facebook or upload pictures… it’s just going to work a whole lot quicker,” said Leanne Persicke, Media Relations Manager for SaskTel.

Persicke adds the upgrades are part of SaskTel’s long-term rural strategy, which aims to bring world-class communication capabilities to rural residents.

“They want to make sure that these smaller communities have as good a service as they do in bigger centres, so that’s why we introduced that rural strategy this spring,” she added. “We know that some people want to do business and live in the smaller centres, but still want some of the amenities that you get in bigger cities.”

Persicke says the upgrades are expected to roll out to the communities through the end of next year.
