New CCA Certificate Program

The Cypress Health Region and Great Plains College are partnering to create a Continuing Care Assistant certificate program at the Swift Current Campus.

They’re structuring it in such a way that students will be able to access it on a part time basis and without having to actually commute to Swift Current.

“The key thing about this program is you can continue working while going into the program,” said Anneke van der Merwe, Undergraduate/Postgraduate Education Coordinator for Cypress Health Region.

Students will only have to find a way to make time for classes twice a week over a maximum of 20 months from this November through June 2015. They can also take it from the campus close to their home.

“The health region has access to a very advanced video system,” van der Merwe said. “Through that we are going to make the training on this course available to rural sites like Maple Creek, Leader and Shaunavon so that people don’t have to drive to Swift Current or Saskatoon or Regina to take classes.”

The offering will help address the demand for CCA’s within the health region, the product of a large number of staff eligible for retirement, while adding yet another post-secondary education option for students in southwest Saskatchewan.

“The foundation of Great Plains College is built on a connection to employment and responsiveness to industry in western Saskatchewan,” said Michelle MacDonald, Director of Programs at Great Plains College. “This offering exemplifies both of those qualities and we’re looking forward to a productive partnership.”

van der Merwe noted they’re hoping that by making it easier for locals to take the course they can build a work force more likely to stay in the region.
