And Then There Were Four…
From eight communities who’ve expressed interest to host the 2016 Saskatchewan Summer Games, Swift Current is now just one of four left in the running.
“We were one of eight communities three months ago, and since that time, four communities prior to the actual full bid being processed and submitted to the Saskatchewan Games Council, three of the other members dropped out,” said Dean Robson, General Manager of Community Services for the City. “That leaves Estevan, Humboldt, Melfort and Swift Current in the running.”
The city submitted its final bid package for the games, and Robson says they received tremendous support for the bid from the community, adding that they had more letters of support than they could fit into the package.
“When we submitted our bid package, we had to take a full other book of actual support letters from not only businesses in the community, but businesses outside of the city of Swift Current, Rural Municipalities and smaller communities within the southwest,” he said. “It’s a real southwest games bid package, and we expect it will be a southwest Games host.”
Robson says they will now go through the final phase of the selection process before the host is selected later this fall.
“The next steps will be a site tour of all the communities by the Saskatchewan games selection committee, and they’ll go back and they’ll choose one of the communities as host for the 2016 Saskatchewan Summer Games.
Swift Current last hosted the summer games in 1976.
