Southwest Saskatchewan came through once again to support the Dr. Noble Irwin Regional Healthcare foundation.

This year’s “Your Family’s Health Radiothon” wrapped up Friday with a final total of $143,544 from the 28-hour event. The money will go toward the purchase of the new CT Scanner installed at Cypress Regional Hospital this summer.

“The commitment from the community never ceases to amaze me,” said Clay Thompson, the Executive Director of the Foundation. “The support of all the volunteers that came and worked a couple-hour shifts on the phone and so on, it’s incredible.”

The radiothon broadcast live from the lobby of the hospital with live local entertainment, and it also raised the importance of having a CT Scanner in the southwest, with testimonials from Cypress Health Region staff and patients who have needed the scanner.

One of those stories came from Megan Wells, who made a presentation at the radiothon. After she was diagnosed with oral cancer in 2011, she was faced with a wait of around three weeks for possible surgery after scheduling a CT scan in Saskatoon. She was then able to get an earlier scan in Swift Current which revealed that her cancer had returned, and she was able to undergo life-saving surgery sooner.

“What amazed me was that there was about three tables full of people here in the cafeteria, and you could have heard a pin drop,” Thompson added. “Everyone listening to her story was taken aback and just excited about how it worked for her and how well she’s doing now.”

The Foundation received a $1.2 million estate gift from the late Roy Blanchard that went toward the scanner earlier this year, and were aiming to raise the remainder of the $1.6 million dollar cost during their 2013 fundraising events.

Thompson says with the money raised at the radiothon, the he can say that the scanner has now been paid for.

“We’re pretty excited about where we’re at, and we’ve been working on it over the course of the last year ourselves,” he added. “We have some stuff in the office that we’ve gathered, and I think we can call it a done deal now.”

With the new total, the Radiothon has now raised nearly $750,000 for the foundation since the first one in 2009.
