Christmas Cove

Christmas Cove is an annual event in its second year that has participants transform the Gull Lake Campground into a Christmas wonderland, which residents and visitors can enjoy throughout the holiday season.
“Lea, Dawnette and I had chatted in the Town Office last year about having displays set up in Little Green on the Prairie for the holiday season, but power was an issue,” Sara Kuntz, Gull Lake and Area Recreation Director, said. “It was eventually suggested that the Tourism Committee get involved and that we use the campground. Power is definitely not an issue there.”
Last year’s turnout was better than expected, with 14 sites being decorated instead of the expected 10. This year, the hope is to have more than 20 sites decorated for Christmas Cove. In all, there are 25 sites still available and Kuntz would like to see all of them decorated.
Projects for Christmas Cove can be as simple or as extravagant as you would like. Kuntz added that the displays do not necessarily have to be a Christmas theme, but can be a holiday or winter theme. Last year, Sara and her team set up a display that had the theme of the Nightmare before Christmas.
There are also prizes to be won for the best three displays, along with bragging rights for the team with the best display.
“First place is $100, second is $50 and third is $25,” Kuntz said. “More important than the prize money, the winning team owns the bragging rights fo rChristmas Cove for the entire year.
While no official deadline is set for booking a site, it is suggested that all participants should try to have their displays ready by Dec. 5.
“Displays will be lit up for the first time during Old Fashioned Christmas on Dec. 5, so as long as you’re set up by then,” Kuntz said. And you are more than welcome to set one up after Dec 5, too. Each group is responsible for the setup and take down of their sites, and also for ensuring that their sites are illuminated nightly. Lots of groups used timers last year, which seemed to work well.”
Each site is $20 with a limit of two sites per entry. Everyone is welcome to take part as long as there is space available and you don’t need a team to participate. Individuals, families, friends, companies, and service groups are all invited to take part to create their own festive holiday display.
