Gull Lake’s old Wong Guy shoe-shop will soon be a community heritage property after the Town struck a deal with the Wong family this past week.
According to Mayor Blake Campbell the Town will take over ownership of the historic building in return for a tax receipt for the value of the property. Campbell says he and council members are excited about being able to reach an agreement with Wong family members.
“We feel the Wong Guy shoe-shop has a significant heritage value to the community,” said Campbell. “The Wong family is very happy with us taking over, and that we’ll preserve that once it becomes a heritage site.”
The building will need some work before it’s fully restored, but Campbell feels the shoe-shop is in remarkable shape for not having been used for over 25 years.
“Walking in there is like walking into history. It still looks like it did on the last day when he (Wong Guy) closed up the shop. You feel like he could be walking back in tomorrow and re-opening,” said Campbell
