Keystone XL Pipeline Developments
The controversial Keystone XL Pipeline might be closer to a reality.
The proposed pipeline would send oil from Alberta down to the southern United States. It would have to be built through the southwest corner of our province, only a few kilometres away from Shaunavon.
The U.S. State Department said in a report that it has no major environmental objections to the construction of the megaproject.
The report stated the project won’t significantly increase the rate of oil extraction and release an unacceptable level of greenhouse gases.
Saskatchewan Premier Brad Wall has been a consistent supporter of the pipeline. He reacted on Twitter by saying “facts are stubborn things.”
The State Department has yet to rule on whether the project is in America’s best interest for non-environmental reasons.
There is no date set for that ruling.
President Obama still ultimately has the final say on whether TransCanada’s major project will get the go-ahead.
