Chinook’s Eigth Annual Music Week Kicks off Tuesday
Chinook School Division’s eighth annual Music Week will be starting next Tuesday for students in Swift Current, Wymark and Gull Lake.
Music week is put on by the Chinook Music Curriculum Advisory Committee with support of the Chinook School Division and gives students a chance to participate in Musical workshops like Drum and classroom, Brass, Percussion and Choral. Celia Hammerton, a music teacher at Central School, said that this years workshop focus will be Choral and Band clinicians.
“We have a vocal clinician coming in to the Chinook Division to work in six different schools for half days. Every year a group of music teachers from the division work together to coordinate a number of workshops and performances at a number of schools,” said Hammerton.
Hammerton added that students will be given the chance to prepare for songs for the clinician to work on with them.
“It’s very beneficial for students and I think that the great thing about the clinicians coming in is that they work with a large number of students, not just the band students,” Hammerton said.
One of the clinicians who will be visiting schools is BJ Harris. Harris is a former member of the a cappella group Streetnix. He has been directing and adjudicating choral groups for over a decade and has a studio teaching voice lessons, writing and arranging music and producing albums for local musicians.
The goal of the workshops is to give students, Grades one to twelve an appreciation for music and is a tremendous learning opportunity for students and teachers alike.
