Our local unemployment rate took a big jump over the last year, but was still among the lowest in Canada last month.

The latest job numbers from Stats Canada had the Swift Current/Moose Jaw region at a 3.8% unemployment rate in February 2014, up from 2.1% in the same month in 2013. It’s the fifth-lowest jobless rate in the country.

The number of people working also dropped by 1500 year-over-year to 50,800 people and the labour force also shrank by 600 to 52,800 people.

Saskatchewan’s unemployment rate was at 3.9% in February 2014, the lowest among the provinces.
