Feds’ plan to increase grain shipments gets mixed reviews

Farm groups had mixed reaction to the federal government’s plan announced last Friday to order the railways to double their grain shipments to one million tonnes per week or face fines of up to $100,000 a day. Some believe the move will help get last year’s record crop back on track, but others say the Harper government is doing too little, too late to clear the backlog of grain that’s been piling up for the past five months and costing western farmers an estimated $5 billion in lost income.
