Unemployment Rate Jumps 2.5% in March

Our local unemployment rate took a pretty big jump over last year.

In the latest job numbers from Stats Canada, Swift Current/Moose Jaw’s jobless rate stood at 4.5% in March, up 2.5% from the 2.0% rate in the same month in 2013. It’s the ninth-lowest unemployment rate in Canada, with Regina/Moose Mountain sporting the lowest rate at 3.4%.

The number of people working in the southwest dropped by 2300 to 51,000 in March, and the labour force population was at 53,400, down 1000 from last year.

Saskatchewan’s unemployment rate was 4.3% in March, the lowest among the provinces.
