At the Regional Health Authority Meeting on Friday, The Cypress Health Region approved a 2014-2015 balanced operating budget of $134.3 million dollars.
“The fact that we balanced our budget this year, it’s a good feeling, that going into a year we have a balanced operating budget that we feel that we can achieve. There are things that happen throughout the year that are out of our control, and we always monitor our financial performance to make sure if something does happen we can look for ways to try to make up those differences,” said Allsen.
When compared to last years 2013-14 budget, an increase of $5.7 million or 4.4 per cent. The increase represents collective bargaining increases and annualized funding for new initiatives introduced in that year.
“The increases to our budget are to remain status quo, it’s not to enhance any programs and services, it’s just to maintain the programs and services that we do have,” said Allsen. “We basically have the funding to cover the things that we do, our core services, and any new initiatives would have to come with a funding piece attached to it like last year with the renal and the CEC in Shaunavon we’re not looking at enhancing at this time.”
The Health Region will spend 81 per cent of the overall budget on salaries and benefits of its 1,700 employees.
The budget will be forwarded to the Minister of Health for the Ministry’s review and formal approval.
