Sasktel will be retiring some old technology at the end of the month.

The crown corporation will be turning down their EV-DO cellular data network on September 13th.

Spokesperson Michelle Englot says the shutdown will affect a small number of their wireless customers.

“Out of our 600,000 customers, we only have approximately 2,400 with EV-DO devices out there,” said Englot. “They will still have data connectivity after we turn it down, but it will be at 1X data speeds.”

The EV-DO network is available in the southwest only in Swift Current and the Maple Creek area and most of the devices that use it are non-smartphones.

The spectrum will now be allocated to Sasktel’s current 4GLTE network.
