JOHNSTONE: Clean coal best bet to stop climate change

It’s been called a billion-dollar bet, a waste of money, the last gasp of the fossil fuel industry and one potential solution to man-made climate change. It’s the first commercial-scale, post-combustion, carbon capture and storage (CCS) project at a coal-fired generating station in the world, and it’s right here in Saskatchewan. It was a grand opening that, for once, lived up to the name. More than 250 people, including politicians, scientists, engineers and journalists, from 20 different countries came to see the official launch of SaskPower’s $1.4-billion CCS project at Boundary Dam power station’s Unit 3 (BD3) in Estevan on Thursday.
