Swift Current, along with the province of Saskatchewan currently are amongst the best in the country when it comes to wait times for surgical procedures.

In Swift Current, there is currently no body waiting longer than 3 months for general surgery, and no one waiting longer than 3 weeks for a cancer related surgery.

“Throughout the surgical initiative there has been some extra resources put into the surgical program here within the Cypress Health Region, as well just really staying on top of those numbers and really being aware of who we have in our communities that is needing surgery,” explained Program Manager of Surgical Services and Ambulatory Care, Carrianne Schultz. “It’s that really good communication skills with our department that does the booking of the surgeries, and the surgeons and the doctors all working really well together to make sure that everything is moving along as quickly and as smoothly as possible, so there is as little as possible road blocks along the way. We also have another target that is set at a provincial and Ministry level that we don’t want people who need surgery because they have cancer waiting longer than three weeks. We currently have nobody waiting longer than the three week target, so if you go to the doctor, you’ve been diagnosed with cancer and it’s decided that you need surgery, you will be having surgery within that three week period.”

Schultz adds there hasn’t been any negative feedback to the Cypress Health Region regarding surgical wait times.

Saskatchewan ranks best in the country when it comes to wait times for bypass surgery, as well as bladder cancer surgery, and lung cancer surgery.
