Town Council received a letter from Mr. Tom Frook asking for August 9th of each year to be proclaimed Keith Mirau Day in Gull Lake. Tom wrote, “Keith was a Gull Lake boy who joined the RCAF and who was killed in a Syrian missile strike in 1974 along with 8 other airmen. It was because of this tragedy that the National Peacekeepers’ Day came into being. I believe that it is only fitting that Keith’s hometown recognize the contribution of all Peacekeepers but, especially, that of Keith Mirau and that Gull Lake should be truly proud of him.”

I had a discussion with Legion President Bruce Freestone regarding the request, and he thought it was a very good idea.  A motion was made at the last Council meeting proclaiming August 9th, “Captain Keith Mirau Day” in Gull Lake. Our Peacekeepers are renowned for their peacekeeping efforts around the world and we as Canadians can take pride in the job they do. I want to thank Mr. Tom Frook for his request and for providing us with this information. It will certainly give us a stronger appreciation for our peacekeepers and National Peacekeepers’ Day.

Proclamation

WHEREAS August 9th is recognized as National Peacekeepers Day; and

WHEREAS on August 9th, 1974 a United Nations-marked Canadian transport aircraft was shot down during Peacekeeping duties, ultimately killing all nine personnel on board.  It was and still is the largest loss of Canadian Peacekeepers in a single day; and

WHEREAS Captain Keith Mirau of Gull Lake, Saskatchewan was among the nine Canadian peacekeepers who lost his life on that day; and

WHEREAS we honour his sacrifice and the sacrifices made by his family and loved ones at home.

THEREFORE, I, Blake Campbell, Mayor of the Town of Gull Lake, do hereby proclaim August 9th as Captain Keith Mirau Day in the Town of Gull Lake and urge all citizens to recognize the efforts made by all those that serve our country with honour.
