Town Council Approves the 2017 Budget Tax Notices will be in the Mail in a Few Days

This year our community faced significant financial challenges. We were impacted by the Clarendon Hotel cleanup, Provincial Funding cuts, and Ministry of the Environment requirement for the landfill to transition to a transfer station. The town will be left with a $90,000 budget shortfall for 2017. To lessen the tax increase needed to cover the shortfall $45,000 will be transferred from reserves and applied to the budget shortfall. The remaining $45,000 deficit will be collected through taxation.

The 2017 Residential mill rate will be set at 3.5 mills. Residential Minimum Tax has been eliminated and replaced with a Base Tax applied to all residential property. The Residential Base Tax (Infrastructure) will be increased to $250.00. The Commercial mill rate will be set at 2.1 mills. Commercial Minimum Tax will also be eliminated and replaced with a Base Tax applied to all commercial properties. The Commercial Base Tax (Infrastructure) will be increased to $250.00.

For more information on taxation see our “HOW TAXES ARE CALCULATED” web page or contact the town office (306) 672-3361.
