Town Council Plans to Implement Swift Current’s “Safe Places Program” in Gull Lake This Fall

At our last Council meeting, representatives from the City of Swift Current (Tim Marcus CAO and Michael Boutillier Communications and Stakeholder Relations Coordinator) were invited to give a presentation on the Safe Places – Youth Certified Program. Two Members of the Gull Lake Athletic Association Board (Karen Bye and Aimee Stusrud) were also invited to attend as we believe the GLAA will be important partners helping us promote this significant community-wide initiative.

The program is for anyone who comes into contact with children and youth in the community, through their business, organizations, or volunteers. It is designed to help raise awareness of bullying, abuse, harassment, and discrimination of children and provide measures to prevent these things from happening.

There are four steps to completing the program and become Youth Certified:

  1. Take Respect in Sport Activity Leader online training (approx 2.5 hours).
  2. Get a valid Criminal Record and Vulnerable Sector Checks.
  3. Fill Out a Youth Certified Application Form.
  4. Submit your satisfactory CRC & VSC, Respect in Sport certificate and completed Youth Certified Application Form to the RCMP for processing.

After successfully completing these four steps you receive a Gull Lake Youth Certified ID number and Card

Town Council will be making a formal request to the City of Swift Current to adopt the City’s Safe Places – Youth Certified Program for Gull Lake this fall. Over the next few months, representatives from the City of Swift Current will help the Town set up the program in Gull Lake. Once the program is up and running all members of Town Council, Administration and Staff will be required to complete the Safe Places Program. We will also be reaching out to businesses, clubs, organizations, and volunteers in the community to participate in this important community initiative aimed at protecting our children.

Gull Lake is an active community with recreational facilities, sports programs,, and activities geared for youth. Our youth are important to us, all and this program will greatly benefit our community.
