On Tuesday, January 28th, 2020, the Ministry of Municipal Relations held its first Volunteer Regional Co-operation Workshop at the Gull Lake Community Hall. The workshop was well attended with urban and rural municipal representatives from Southwest Saskatchewan. The meeting started with opening remarks made by myself and Terry Winter (Reeve of the RM of Gull Lake).
The main goal of the workshop is to help municipalities explore opportunities that neighboring communities can work on together to help improve services to residents. Participants spent the day in groups discussing a variety of opportunities in the following areas:
- Governance and administration.
- Land-use planning.
- Infrastructure and asset management.
- Relationship building.
- Shared services.
- Shared recreation services.
Regional Cooperation is growing in importance as municipalities working together can pool resources and or funding to help improve services for residents. The facilitators did a great job facilitating the conference it was very interactive and well worth attending.
