My name is Steven Haithwaite and I am re-running for town council. My wife and I chose to move here and raise our family over 12 years ago. We could sense what a great little community it was, and valued all the recreational facilities that it had to offer for our family. I have been married for 18 years to Jennifer Haithwaite. She works at the credit union here in town. She has been there for the past 7 years. I have two great kids Kaydence (grade 10) and Cohen (grade 8). They go to Gull Lake School. They are both involved in plenty of local and community minded activities. We enjoy spending time as a family at the theatre and skating rink.
I have served on council for 4 years. As this term comes to an end I have come to realize the impact that being on town council has, and I have enjoyed the challenges and the learning of being on council. I feel that now I have an understanding of how municipal politics work, and I want to continue my growth and commitment to the town. This last year I had the pleasure to attend the SUMA convention for the first time. I found that I learnt a lot from it and really enjoyed it. I have been involved with many committees such as tourism, fire board, and the rec committee.
I have been working at the theatre as a relief manager for the past 4 years. During Covid you may have seen me at the theatre volunteering my time selling popcorn on a Friday. During these hard times I thought it would be a little bit of positivity to have our theatre famous popcorn available to the community. I have now been selected to join the theatre board which I’m excited about since the theatre is something I am passionate about.
I have supported council in the distribution of federal money for the COVID safe restart program. I have been approached and am easy to approach about concerns within the town. I will openly discuss any matter at hand. As a community it’s important to have facilities, businesses and extra events to attract young families to our town. I have supported council in the creation of the Economic Development Committee which has brought events such as the Summer Solstice and the downtown markets.
In the tough times we are in, I feel this community needs a strong minded individual to continue to be a voice for this community. I am and will continue to be a strong voice for the town of Gull Lake. On Nov 9th I would appreciate your vote.
