Gull Lake Recognizes Benefits and Values of Recreation, Parks and Leisure GULL LAKE Health & Wellness Volunteers Town Council Meadowdale Golf Course Gull Lake Recreation Complex Gull Lake Curling Rink Gull Lake & Area Recreation Board

In recognition of the benefits and values that recreation, parks and leisure services provide, the Town of Gull Lake is proclaiming June as Recreation & Parks Month. We are fortunate to have many dedicated volunteers involved in recreation offering programs as well as operating our recreational facilities: Gull Lake & District Recreation Complex, Gull Lake Curling Co-operative, Gull Lake Athletic Association, Meadowdale Golf Club are just some of the volunteer boards that make it possible for Gull Lake to have a wide range of recreational opportunities.

The Gull Lake & Area Recreation Board funded by contributions from the Town of Gull Lake, R.M. of Gull Lake, R.M. of Carmichael, R.M. of Webb, Village of Webb, Village of Tompkins, and Saskatchewan Lotteries Community Grant Program, led by the Recreation Director, awards grants annually for sports, culture and recreation in the Gull Lake area. These grants are used for facility improvements and repairs as well as programming in the area.

Our Recreation Director, Sara Kuntz, is responsible for everything from grant writing, fundraising, scheduling and bookings at the Recreation Complex and Ball Diamonds, operating Crescent Point Pool, and running a variety of programs throughout the year. In 2017 Sara obtained $50,000 in grant money and $60,000 in fundraising in the community. All of this money was put back into our facilities and programs offered in the community. In the 6.5 years as Recreation Director, Sara has raised $300,000 in grants and fundraising! Some of the programming offered in 2017 included: chalk paint class; rec bowling league, rec volleyball league, women’s volleyball tournament, succulent plant class, Kids in the Kitchen, babysitting course, slo-pitch league, slo-pitch tournament, workout classes, youth strength and conditioning classes, step aerobics, Zumba, Country Heat, play programs in both Gull Lake & Tompkins, swimming lessons, aquafit, lane & early bird swim, diving clinic and Winterfest festivities. 2018 has seen the addition of adult cooking classes, pickle ball, pottery classes and Aqua Zumba. And as if she is not busy enough, she also coaches junior volleyball and junior basketball. She is one busy lady and we appreciate all that she does for our community!

In 2017 the Town of Gull Lake spent $118,500 on recreation which included a contribution of $33,868 to the Gull Lake & Area Recreation Board. This contribution represents 48% of the board’s budget. The Town also pays insurance costs of $30,000 for our recreational facilities, $17,654 for maintenance at the ball diamonds and parks, $3,000 to Antelope Lake Regional Park Authority, and $21,196 to Chinook Regional Library. The Crescent Point Pool deficit is covered 50% ($12,575) by the Town with the remaining 50% shared by the R.M. of Gull Lake, Carmichael and Webb.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who helps in any way with recreation and parks in our community.
